George Clarke Denton was born 22-4-1881 & was the only son of Sir George Chardin Denton K.C.M.G. Who was the governor of Gambia 1901-1911. He was commissioned in to the Yorkshire Regiment 19-10-1900 & served with the 3rd battalion in South Africa During the Boer war 1899-1902. He was attached to the Indian army & was sadly killed in action in East Africa whilst leading his men in a bayonet charge 9-10-1916. He was twice M.I.D for services in East Africa 22-11-1916 & 7-8-1917 for services rendered as a commander of Zanzibar troops. He was an old boy of Rugby school and was recommended for the award of the D.S.O. He is buried in Dar Es Salaam military cemetery & was 35 years of age at the time of his death.
The medal is mounted as worn from the original ribbon & comes complete with research details that include a copy image of the recipient as part of a group from the regimental magazine.
