Andrew Murray from Edinburgh was educated at Edinburgh university & originally enlisted in to the 15th service battalion of the Cameronians / Scottish Rifles. He was commissioned in to the 13th service battalion & proceeded overseas with the 9th service battalion. He served as the battalion intelligence officer & volunteered to be attached to the Machine Gun Corps. He was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders at Grandcourt 19-10-1916 when he was struck by a snipers bullet. His C.O stated in a letter to his parents that he was to be recommended for the Military Cross had he not been killed in action. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.
