Samuel Higgins was one of the original members of the 25th service battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers / 2nd Tyneside Irish & was issued the service number 25-566. He was born in Whitehaven & enlisted in Newcastle whilst living in Blaydon. He was killed in action in France & Flanders 4-9-1916 whilst serving with the 27th battalion / 4th Tyneside Irish & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial. He was 23 years of age at the time of his death and is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of Mary Jane Watson of 37 Theresa street, Blaydon on Tyne, County Durham.
