Arthur Gerald Vavasour Yates was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire and was the son of the local coroner. He was educated at Macclesfield Grammar school. He enlisted in to the Artists Rifles in December 1915 and went on to be commissioned in to the 1/6th battalion of the London regiment / Queens Westminster Rifles. He was sadly killed in action leading his men on the first day of the battle of the Somme 1-7-1916 & having no known grave he is commemorated on the Theipval memorial on the Somme. The C.W.G.C state that he was the late son of Hercules Campbell Yates & Annie Yates of the lower Beech, Tytherington, Macclesfield.
