Richard Henry Freeman was born in 1875 and by the time he enlisted in to the 9th service battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment in 1915 he was a 40 year old married man with children and working as a coal miner whilst living in West Cornforth, County Durham. He first landed in theatre of war 2B Gallipoli / the Balkans 21-9-1915 & was wounded whilst serving in France 8-11-1916.He was awarded the Military medal for services in France in the London gazette 9-12-1916 but this was published in the surname of Goundry. He deserted whilst in the UK and was absent from 23-4-1917 to 5-6-1917. At this point he was serving with the 89th training reserve battalion. He was arrested in Blyth and stated that he was a coal miner. His MIC states that his medals were forfeited for desertion but this has been crossed out. His widow made a claim for a pension in 1922 so presumably he was deceased by that time? As to why his name differs from the MM to the trio? I assume it may relate to his desertion & originally forfeiting his medals? I was told by the recipients great grandson that Goundry was an old family surname on his mothers side?
NEF & Complete with a picture of the recipient in D.L.I uniform that has been inscribed in ink on the reverse by his son.
