William Charles Austen was born in Chatham 7-2-1882 & enlisted in to the Royal Navy as a boy 15-7-1897 age 15. He served onboard HMS Implacable from 2-2-09 to 22-10-1910 during which time he earned the Naval Good Shooting medal. Durng WW1 he served onboard HMS Intrepid, HMS Orvieto & HMS Wahine. He was both M.I.D 3-8-17 & awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM)
25-10-1916 for services with the Dover Patrol. He left the service 6-2-1922 when he was discharged to shore with a pension.
