Phillip Downie was born in Gateshead on Tyne & enlisted in Newcastle on Tyne. He first landed in France 22-11-1915 serving with D- Company of the 16th service battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers / The Newcastle Commercials. He was sadly killed in action in France & Flanders 1-7-1916 on the first day of the battle of the Somme.He was 22 years of age at the time of his death & is buried in Lonsdale cemetery at Authuile.He is recorded by the C.W.G.C as the late son of George & Hannah Downie of 64 Grey Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
The medals are NEF & the 1914-15 star has been gilded / gold plated. The plaque is EF/MINT & retains its original chocolate brown patina.
