Patrick Smith was born in 1880 & lived at 20 Pit Row, Brandon Colliery, County Durham. He enlisted in to the 20th service battalion of the Durham Light Infantry 8-10-1915 at Wensley & stated that his next of kin was his stepmother Mrs Helen Hughes.He first arrived in France 5-5-1916 & he went on to be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette
12-12-1917 & this was for his actions during the battalions Tower Hamlets action 20th to 22nd of September 1917.He was discharged 16-2-1919 & went on to live at 2 Vine Street, Thornley colliery, County Durham & the London gazette stated that he was a resident of Trimdon.
