WW1 MILITARY CROSS (MC) & TRIO, 11th ROYAL FUSILIERS, KILLED IN ACTION WITH THE R.F.C 6-1-1918

WW1 Military Cross (MC) & 1914-15 Trio

Richard Nagel Ford was the son of Edmund Salway Ford Justice of the peace for the County of Cornwall & was educated at Mitchell college Cambridge & the R.M.C Sandhurst. He was commissioned in to the Royal Fusiliers in 1903 & served with the 3rd battalion. He first landed in France in January 1915 & was twice wounded at the second battle of Ypres in May of 1915. After a spell in hospital in the UK he returned to France as adjutant to the 7th battalion in July 1916. He was awarded the MC in January 1917 with the following citation.
Captain.R.N.Ford.Royal Fusiliers, He twice went out under very heavy fire to ascertain the situatuion, theerby rendering most valuable assistance at a critical time. He set a fine example throughout.
He was invalided home with ill health in February 1917 but he returned to France in October of the same year as second in command of the 11th battalion. In January 1918 he began a four day course for senior officers of the RFC & sadly on the third day 6-1-1918 he was killed when he his plane collided with another training aircraft & all four occupants of both planes were killed. He is buried in Doullens communal cemetery extension No-1 & is recorded by the C.W.G.C as the late 33 year old son of Edmund Salwey Ford & Caroline Ford of 17 Hyde Park Square, London.

The 1914-15 star has been gold plated / gilded & the victory medal is the scarce 1st type dull bronze version.
