William Ephraim Comber was born in West Hoathley and joined the volunteer force at East Grinstead in 1897. He served with the East Grinstead volunteers for five years & went on to the special reserve. He was recalled for service in November 1914 & first landed in France 19-1-1915 serving with the 2nd Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action in a bayonet charge 9-5-1915 & is commemorated on the Le Touret memorial. He was 42 years of age at the time of his death & is recorded by the CWGC as the late son of William & Elizabeth Comber of West Hoathley & the late husband of Edith Constance Comber of 2 Bow cottages, West Hoathley, Sussex. The recipient has a lengthy entry that includes an image of him in uniform in De Ruvigny's roll of honour
