GV WW1 DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL (DCM) QSA 1899-1902 WITH SCARCE SINGLE CLASP SOUTH AFRICA 1902, WW1 PAIR & GV 1ST TYPE ARMY LS&GC TO,4240.TPTR / B.S.MJR/WO.CL.2.F.A.WILLIAMS.175TH.SEIGE.BATTERY.R.G.A (ON THE DCM) & 63RD.COY.R.G.A (ON THE QSA) FRANCIS.A.WILLIAMS FROM LONDON ENLISTED AGE 16 23-1-1900 & SERVED IN SOUTH AFRICA AS A BOY TRUMPETER.HE WAS AWARDED THE DCM IN THE LONDON GAZETTE 19-11-1917 WITH A CITATION THAT STATES, For conspicious gallantry & devotion to duty durin a heavy bombardment of the battery.He assisted on four occassions in removing wounded men to the dressing station and on one occassion deliberatley placed himself between a wounded man & bursting shell.He showed great courage & contempt of danger, and set a spendid example to his men. THE LONDON GAZETTE STATES HE WAS LIVING IN ROMFORD ESSEX.
