GVIR 1ST TYPE DFM, 1939-45 STAR, AFRICA STAR, ITALY STAR, FRANCE & GERMANY STAR, DEFENCE MEDAL & 1939-45 WAR MEDAL TO, 978151.SGT.G.HORSBURGH.R.A.F. GEORGE HORSBURGH WAS AWARDED THE DFM IN THE LONDON GAZETTE 12-3-1943 AFTER FLYING 50 SORTIES OVER 329 HOURS AS A W.OP/AIR GUNNER WITH 40 SQUADRON. THE DFM ROLL HAS THE FOLLOWING CITATION FOR THE AWARD OF THE RECIPIENTS DFM.This N.C.O.Wireless operator / Air gunner joined no-40 squadron at the end of June 1942 & since that date has completed 50 operations comprising 329 operational flying hours.Sergeant Horsburgh has always carried out his duties in a cool & efficient manner & can always be relied upon to check his equpment thoroughly before departing on operations.Towards the end of his tour of duty in Malta,Whilst suffering from tiredness & a severe cold,he continued to operate with determination & devotion to duty.This N.C.O's work is not spectacular but has been invaluable to the captain of his aircraft.THE RECIPIENT WAS THEN COMMISSIONED IN TO NO-7 SQUADRON IN OCTOBER 1943 WITH SENIORITY FROM 11-12-1942 & WAS GIVEN A NEW OFFICERS SERVICE NUMBER 155866. HE WAS SADLY KILLED IN ACTION 8-8-1944 AS A AIR GUNNER / F/O WITH NO-7 SQUADRON WHEN HIS LANCASTER WAS LOST ON A NIGHT TIME RAID OVER NORMANDY. THAT LEFT RAF OAKINGTON AT 22.05 ON THE NIGHT OF 7-8-1944 & DID NOT RETURN. THE KILL WAS CLAIMED BY THREE DIFFRENT GERMAN PILOTS BUT ROLF KOCH WAS THE FIRST TO MAKE THE CLAIM. A POST WAR ENQUIRY IN TO THE LOSS WAS INFORMED THAT THE FOUR ENGINE BOMBER SWEPT OVER BOLBEC ON FIRE & DISINTERGRATED IN THE AIR PRIOR TO IMPACT. THIS RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF ALL EIGHT CREW MEMBERS.FLYING OFFICER GEORGE HORSBURGH IN BURIED IN THE BOLBEC COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND WAS 30 YEARS OF AGE AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. THE MEDALS ARE NEF OR BETTER & THE DFM STILL RETAINS THE ORIGINAL SILK MEDAL RIBBON & PRESENTATION PIN.COMPLETE WITH DFM ROLL DETAILS FROM TAVENDER ALONG WITH LONDON GAZETTE & COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION DETAILS
